BREAST RECONSTRUCTION SURGERY

Breast reconstruction and breast lifts are procedures used to restore the breast to a more normal appearance. Although both procedures serve the same end purpose, they are used for different reasons.

Breast Reconstruction Surgery

Reconstructive surgery restores one or both breasts to a more normal shape. It is very common for this to take place due to having medical procedures such as mastectomy or lumpectomy done. Another popular reason for choosing reconstruction is to correct congenital deformities. In some cases, breast reconstruction surgery can even take place during or soon after mastectomy, or lumpectomy. Reconstructive surgery is also an option months or years after mastectomy or lumpectomy. During reconstruction, a plastic surgeon will create a breast shape using an artificial implant (implant reconstruction), a flap of tissue from another place on your body (autologous reconstruction), or both. Breast reconstruction surgeries can restore your appearance and boost your confidence.

BREAST RECONSTRUCTION SURGERY IN UTAH

There are two basic types of breast reconstruction: implant-based and flap.

For implant-based surgery, the surgeon uses implants to form a new breast mound in place of tissue removed from surgery. There are different types of implants that are available to you.

Saline Breast Implants: Saline-filled implants are available to all women for breast augmentation over the age of 18. A silicone shell is inserted into the body and then filled to its desired volume by the plastic surgeon with saline fluid.

Silicone Breast Implants: As opposed to saline, silicone gel implants have a tendency to feel a bit more like natural breast tissue. In the US, all silicone breast implants are made of a cohesive gel, which is a thicker type of silicone implant. The thickest ones, known as form-stable implants, are referred to as highly cohesive breast implants. Meaning they keep their shape even if the shell is broken or cut. Due to the fact they are firmer than regular implants, they are less likely to rupture or break.

There are different shapes and sizes of saline and silicone implants and they can have either a smooth or textured surface. Any type of implant might need to be replaced at some point if it leaks or ruptures.

In flap reconstruction, the surgeon uses the patient’s tissue from another area of their body such as the stomach, back, thighs, or buttocks to rebuild the breast shape. Tissue flaps can look and feel more natural compared to regular implants. One thing to keep in mind is that tissue flaps will change like any other tissue in your body. For example, they may get bigger or smaller as you gain or lose weight. Tissue flaps are often used by themselves to reconstruct the breast, but some tissue flap procedures can be used with a breast implant if more volume is needed.

BREAST RECONSTRUCTION FAQs

What is breast reconstruction surgery?

During breast reconstruction, the surgeon replaces breast tissue removed during breast cancer surgery and reshapes it to restore a near-normal appearance. Reconstruction surgery can also be used to correct some congenital conditions.

Will I be under anesthesia for my procedure?

We offer a number of options to help keep you comfortable and pain-free during your procedure. Our doctors will talk with you during the initial consultation to determine the best approach for your needs.

How long is the recovery?

Everyones body may react a little differently to a reconstruction surgery, however most women can start to get back to normal activities within 6 to 8 weeks. If implants are used without flaps, your recovery time may be shorter. Some things to keep in mind: Certain types of reconstruction surgery do not restore normal feeling to your breast, but in other types some feeling might return over time.

How much does breast reconstruction cost?

Without health insurance, prices can range from $5000-$15000 per breast depending on the type of reconstruction performed. During the initial consultation, a better price point can be estimated for your specific needs.

Does breast reconstruction leave a scar?

The extent and nature of the surgical scars from breast reconstruction surgery can vary from patient to patient depending on the nature of the procedure that was performed. Generally, there is a horizontal scar along the middle of the breasts made as part of the mastectomy. The scar tissue heals well with time, though it will be somewhat noticeable even after it has faded. Such is the nature of all surgical scars.

How do I know if I’m a good candidate for breast reconstruction?

Women who have undergone a lumpectomy or who have congenital abnormalities may be a good candidate for reconstruction. It is important to have realistic expectations from the surgery and be in good health otherwise.
